Review: Samsung Nexus S – Gingerbread, Hummingbird Processor, Wifi Hotspot and much more

Thanks to Maxis10, It has been almost more than 2 weeks since I am using Google Samsung Nexus S. In past, we did make a general comparison of different features of Apple iPhone 4 and Samsung Nexus S. But the fact is, it’s a bit difficult to chose which one is better among the two. However, Nexus S has some excellent features including 1GHz processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and much more.

Here are some key features of Google Samsung Nexus S:

  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread
  • 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 Hummingbird Processor
  • 4.0″ WVGA (480×800) Super AMOLED Contour Display with curved glass screen
  • 16GB storage, 512 MB RAM
  • 5 MP autofocus camera with LED flash
  • Front-facing VGA camera
  • Portable Wifi Hotspot
  • Near Field Communication (NFC)
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Google Mobile Apps
  • Flash Support
  • GSM and 3G Support

One thing I really like about Google Nexus S is the default Android 2.3 Gingerbread user interface. In Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the stock home screen looks something like the one shown below. And the best thing about it that you add different widgets on different home screens to manage your social networking and other applications. By default Samsung Nexus S comes with 5 home screens which can be customized by installing applications like LauncherPro.

Another thing is the Live Wallpapers which brings the phone to life. They are animated and are always one the move. Tapping on the screen creates movement of the things in the wallpapers as if they are real.

Nexus S has some excellent multitasking capabilities. You can use multiple applications at the same time and the best thing is, it does not affect the performance of the device or the application we are using, even if many apps are running in the background. To switch applications, tap on the home button for 2-3 seconds and you will see a screen something like the one shown below.

Samsung Nexus S has threaded messaging system and is very well designed. All SMS/MMS are organized into threads consisting of messages between you and your friends.

Google Nexus S has the traditional android gallery with different albums categorized in 3D view and different effects.

Google Nexus S is equipped with 5MP Camera with LED flash and a front facing VGA camera. In Nexus S, you can take pictures even with the front facing video call camera as well. If you open the Camera app, you will find the user interface to be good and simple with many features. However, one thing which I do miss in Google Nexus S is 720p video recording.

You can check some pictures taken using Google Nexus S here.

If you want to install apps on Nexus S, you can head over to Android Market and download them. The interface of Android market is really simple and good. You can download and search applications easily.

Here are some of disadvantages or more of what I can say, features which are lacking in Google Nexus S:

  • No microSD card slot
  • No FM Radio
  • No 720p Video Recording
  • No Smart Dialing
  • No Dedicated Camera key and lens cover

Well, in the end we can say that Nexus S is an excellent smartphone equipped with some powerful hardware. However, many people may find it old considering the fact that new android devices are about to release with better specifications like Samsung Galaxy S2 and few others.
